Ramesh

Ramesh recounts her immigration journey from India to the UK in September 1976, having previously resided in East Africa, Tanzania. Her family, including her parents and brother with his wife, had already established themselves in the UK.

Initially, Ramesh's husband struggled to adapt to the local Indian cuisine in the UK, but with time, they learned to incorporate local ingredients into their traditional dishes. Their adaptation was particularly challenging in Tottenham, where they were one of the few Asian families in a predominantly English neighbourhood.

Ramesh's family creatively transformed English greens and spinach to resemble Indian dishes, helping her husband adjust.

Ramesh also highlighted the difficulties faced by Asian patients in hospitals due to language barriers and unfamiliar food. Motivated by these experiences, she became an advocate for her community, beginning with the pursuit of free bus passes for British citizens from Africa, aiming to address discrimination within the community.
